I'm a big fan of credits maps. They take a little extra work, but wrap everything up so nicely with bow and a good way for the player to wind down. They are a lot more popular recently, in general, but one of the earlier ones that stuck with me was in 50shades.wad. It has a comfy movie-theater/museum that you can walk around in, showcasing a screenshot-photo of each map with a player tag beneath it. If you pay careful attention, even, you'll notice one of the photos is a new map, and can activate it for a secret bonus map. I loved that setup.

It explodes a little still, but it explodes with style.

Map Name (I guess): I Drew A Kitty in Doombuilder
      Download: I_Drew_A_Kitty_In_Doombuilder.wad
      Linedef Count: 9999
Playtesting: In theory, yes. Should be a cool challenge map.

Edit: Fun trivia, apparently Aug 8th was "Cat Day", and today, Aug 10th is "Lion Day", and 9 is a kitty number (Aug 9th). Weird coincidence.

Edit 2: EPILEPSY WARNING unless I find whatever rogue vertex is causing the sky bleed stutter... I just loaded this with the actual resource pack... yikes.

Edit 3: Fixed broken geometry with Map Analysis mode, still has same issue, oh well.

Edit 4: Checked it out in GLBoom and looks great. Automap adds a whole new layer of abstract art onto this, and I'm not disappointed (Might swap the floor out from sky, not sure. Not sure if Cuppy is hard publishing as is, or there will be a beta):

I have a thing I'm working on, and am leaning towards using this project as a landing grounds for it.

Patch for my map that simply turns all damaging sectors into death exits
      AMOREUPHO_RC1_noisyUpdate.wad

Edit: I watched Vile's vod, who picked it up real quickly as always... I kinda want to multiply the monster count by x10 now... No, Noisy, you can't just do that. You must resist your urges. The map is already out. Hnggg.

OH shit. I gotta get off my ass.

Edit: I'm pretty sure I'm gonna add a little more detail to the kitty drawing, and scale it up, and turn it into a bunch of catwalks (no pun intended) a la The Chasm. Then I'll work from there, probably have an optional exit at the start of the map for those who don't want to max it and just want to leave. Also, it turns out that stock Doom doesn't actually have a pitch-white nor pitch-black flat texture, but I might be able to do gimmicks with LightAmps and Invulnerability... I don't really know.

Even if I don't get too crazy with it, I'll at least have something that people can walk around in a bit until they get bored, and I'll still have the map around if I want to build on it later down the road after this project is released.

I haven't forgot about this. I accidently sucked myself into another project, but I'll have something by Aug 10th.

Might have exploded Map07 bridge, not sure if big issue or not.

Edit: Western Starlight Bridge entrance landing that you jump onto was a little weird for me, maybe I skipped the trigger that brings in the revenant and chaingunner, but it was finnicky, fyi. (more pedantic play notes)

Otherwise, these maps actually play pretty well so far. Ended up actually playing them instead of just idcleving around through them.

Edit: Map08, a semi softlock... Edit: Nevermind, ~snip~.

Edit: Map08 is a great map, but quite a toughy. The cyberdemon got stuck somehow and couldn't infight things anymore on complevel 13, but that might be an issue on my end.

(skipping Map09 cuz I played it already).

And Map10: My notes thus far are stream-of-thought and shouldn't be taken as bad marks, but after seeing my map again, lol I wouldn't have any right to talk smack about other maps' jank anyways :).

Final: Well, I enjoyed this set a lot, actually.

    • RE: Flash Damage

      Oooooh I like the idea.

Picky notes incoming: Because it's just the pain state, it still feels a little awkward when, for example, when you blast an Archvile but it doesn't have any indicator (but still damaged it). Something feels mentally disconnected in this case: Having a haptic for the pain state be this magnitude of flashy, while having little reward for general damage, feels inconsistent.

It also made me realize how short the Imp's paint state is, and the shortness of the imp's flicker is awkward. But it also makes imp hordes more satisfying to blast, because you get to see how your pellet-spray lands on them (assuming pain state triggers).

Basically, I ran around in Suburbs Map16 and did indeed have fun with this demo.

Lazarevenant is getting a lot of bites from the DWIronman League. I just watched a JohnSuitepee vod on Twitch and he was the first person to survive it. And oh boy, it was one of the most epic runs I've seen.

    • RE: What's your least favorite weapon? (Besides the melee and pistol)

@Devalaous said in What's your least favorite weapon? (Besides the melee and pistol):

I dislike the BFG, not only for being over the top and a I Win button in classic gameplay, but also for the slaughtermap trope of 'BFG these hordes or die' which makes me roll my eyes.

Its funny, because when I was young I loved the sheer power of the BFG, and hated the 'pointless' plasma rifle. Now its fully reversed.

You should play TimeOfDeath's ESP.wad. It will change you fundamentally as a person and turn you into a broken true connoisseur and expert of the BFG and BFG oriented gameplay. My favorite weapon is the BFG >:D. Though it makes balance kinda weird amongst other weapons. Just giving a BFG in a secret somewhere blows balance out of the water.

Least favorite? I suppose the chainsaw. Only because it gets in the way sometimes, especially if there's a berserk pack in the mapset. It's useful against pinkies and imps, but sometimes I'd rather just non-berserk punch them instead.

If that doesn't count, then probably the chaingun. I used to like it a lot as a kid in the 90's, and it's good for stun-locking, but it's kinda slow-to-kill and more boring than the punchy other weapons. I almost never pull it out unless I need to manage ammo. Juggling arachnotrons and using it to keep space can be fun with it, though. In general, plasma gun feels more satisfying to use by miles though (and I also enjoy the plasma sound, especially over the pathetic chaingun "popcorn" sound, sorry).

These look great. Since DBP50, I don't wanna stare at the color green for another few months, but I still gotta cheer this on. Good luck on the release.

Boop Beep. I am a normal human being too and come in peace, and totally not a weirdo.

Most of those captcha's are to crowdsource image recognition data, good for self-driving cars, etc. Creepy but cool.

I bet you could use minigames and quizzes to farm all sorts of cool creepy cool psychometric/telemetric stuff too and take over the world.

I mean, Beep Boop. I am an ormal human being.
